South Bend (AP): It was a bright, sunny day in South Bend, Indiana. But there was no sunshine for the Fighting Irish Saturday as the North Central South Dakota Polytechnic Institute (Norcentral) Freaking Plovers bowled over Notre Dame by a score of 42-0.
On the first play of the game, Plover quarterback John Flowers lofted a 77-yard bomb to wideout Kyle Powell, setting up the Mobridge Maulers at the Irish 4 yard line. Two plays later, halfback Seth Johnson took the pitch left to score and the rout was on.
After their first possession of the 3rd quarter and leading 35-0, Norcentral subbed in the reserves to close out the win.
For the second week in a row, Powell would be the star of the game. The 6’-1”, 209 lb. senior from Cincinnati, Ohio would catch 5 for 194 yards and a TD.
Flowers To Powell For 77 Yards
Flowers completed 8 of 10 passes for 235 yards and 2 TD. HB Seth Johnson led on the ground with 85 yards on 14 carries and 3 scores. Freshman Gary Wood picked up 67 yards on 12 tries.
After the game, Head Football Coach and Chancellor (for life), Gomer S. Blake showed some mixed emotions.
“We played ecceptionately well on both sides of the ball. Let’s win! On the other finger, I am not happy with Kyle. Sure, he made some nice snatches, but he’s too damned fat and slow. He got dragged down from behind 3 times. That is not receptable! Let’s win!”
Next week the Freaking Plovers host Arkansas in a big BI6 Conference game.
